When the inner lining of the uterine cavity (Endometrium) happens to grow on other parts of the body, most commonly on the ovaries , tubes, etc, it is known as endometriosis. These cells act in the similar way to that found in uterus, and responds to changes in hormones during menstrual periods. This tissue breaks down and bleeds into surrounding areas, causing pain, inflammation, scarring, and adhesions. Endometriosis found in ovary can grow and form cysts known as Chocolate cysts or Endometriomas.
Main symptoms of endometriosis are pain and infertlity. Nearly half of those affected have chronic pelvic pain, while in 70% pain occurs during menstruation. Pain during sexual intercourse also common. Infertility occurs up to half of women affected. Around 25% of women are asymptomatic.
Even mild form of endometriosis can cause severe pelvic pain, while women with severe endometriosis and extensive pelvic damage were detected accidently during laparoscopic evaluation for infertility.
How it affects infertility- scarring and adhesions can damage the fallopian tubes. Endometriosis in the ovary can damage healthy ovarian tissue, affect the quality of egg & and inhibit ovulation. It can also produce chemicals that are toxic to developing embryo.

Patient in fertility group planning for pregnancy Laparoscopy is the best option. Through laparoscopy adhesions released and endometriotic lesions cauterized, cvsts removed, and normal anatomy of uterus, tubes, and ovaries restored. This is followed by medical amenorrhea in some cases (stops mensturation, so that microscopic celis also shrink).
